Clear brown pour, small beige head. Sweet, nutty aroma, bready with caramel. The finish is again quite nutty, and a tad sweet, with an incredible, lingering bitterness.

A hazed reddish amber ale with a thin very thin off white head. In aroma, nice biscuit malt with grassy hops, light mineral notes, light caramel notes and treacle. In mouth, good caramel malt with light grassy hops, treacle, resinous and piney notes, very nice after 5 years. Bottle from LCBO.

The final beer of the historical beer four pack that has thus far made me question if it REALLY was religious persecution, or famines, or the yearning for land, lots of land, and the starry sky above that landed our ancestors here, or did they just kick out the folk who didn’t know sh!t about brewing beer. Is the beer worthy of it’s namesake’s pub’s history? Or more reflective of the site of the pub’s current occupant, a post office. We shall see... The pour is a nice orange-caramel colour, with no head, though you can see those bubbles a bubblin’. A really nice caramel malt nose, with some slight perfuming that always seem to go hand-in-hand with rye malts for me. And some slight bitter hops. The taste is good. Strong toasted malts, without being sweet, bittering hops balance well. Some of the bitter slightly lingers on the finish, but otherwise fairly clean. It’s not a bad beer, might be the best of the lot. Man I wish Black Creek had more impressive beers. I love the idea, but their beers just seem fall a little flat.

These Black Creeks are getting a little better, a little more interesting. Half smoked, half roast in the taste with some peat or something in taste. Some malt some hops. Average carbonation. Pours dark brown, Finishes bitter and sweet with some caramel malt. Bottle.

Bottle from LCBO. Pours a deep amber with no head to speak of. Nose is almost exclusively caramel and toffee with a hint of grass. Very little of the rye promised on the label comes through. Taste is very sweet. Medium body with a watery flat feel. Some bitterness does finally show up in the finish. Maybe the flatness was a bad bottle. Might have to try another.

Single brown bottle from the LCBO. Pours a deep amber colour with a frothy off-white head, great retention and creamy lacing. Was expecting a rye nose, but no, as strong butterscotch smell (reminding me of Steelback brews) with hints of nuts and light grass. Wet, boring mouthfeel that starts off the taste kind of bland and watery. Then, some nice grass kicks in a bit, adding some light bitterness and dryness. I guess the butterscotch I get from this brew, is the combination of lots of caramel malt and butter (diacetyl), which makes me think, this brew should not be like this, but much better. Beautiful looking beer though. Where’s the rye ?
