Bottle shared with and by Ben. Pours dark, unclear, caramelly brown. Médium creamy white head. Smell is bit roasty ( mild), caramel, liquorice, earthy) taste is sweet, bit bitter, sugary, tastes don't work together at all to me... Making it what we call ' wrang' in Dutch. Not sure if there even is a English word for that. Perhaps the bitterness just throws this beer right out of balance?

Jef Pirens' 100th brew, a limited edition strong ale of 100 EBC and 100 IBU and boiled for 100 minutes - interesting idea, though not necessarily resulting in a beer worthy of such a celebration... Steini bottle at Estaminet De Brouwerij (so at the brewery's own premises in Izegem). Thick, pale greyish white, creamy, stable head lacing in dots over a hazy, very dark but translucent chocolate brown beer with coppery hue, turning 'murky' and opaque with sediment. Aroma of toasted brown bread, black coffee, whisky, dried figs, elderberry juice, damp earthy, dry tree leaves, toasted walnuts, wormwood leaves, gin, wax. Dry flavour, restrained dried fig and raisin sweetishness in the onset, sourish edge, fizzy carbonation. Thick nutty and toasted malt body, more bitter than sweet, with the bitterness turning into full-blown roasted coffeeish bitterness towards the finish, amplified by the 100 IBU of resinous, herbal, peppery, leafy hop bitterness which lasts for a long time. Earthy yeast notes (especially in the end) and heating, whisky-like alcohol further fill the finish, the latter balancing on the brink of astringency. Bold, dry, very bitter and intense beer, could be regarded as a Belgian black IPA of sorts I guess, but then the idea was not to put a specific style intention upfront, but to see what happens if 100 IBU and 100 EBC are combined - so I can accept the generic "Belgian strong ale" classification here. Interesting one, and among Oude Maalderij's better brews so far.

Thanks to tderoeck, Bierridder_S & Rubin77. Sampled @ Brugs Bier Festival 2018. Dark brown amber, tanned head. Nose is massive thick leaves, dark bread, bitter weeds, thick herbal dark bread. Taste is dark bread leaves, bread, interesting, not very complex but nice, thicker dark bread body and a lot better than quite a few recent Oude Maalderij beers.

At Brugs Bierfestival, 3 February 2018. Cheers to Anke, Ian, Kevin & Jerre!

Cloudy brown with a lasting, small, beige head. Aroma of candied fruits, caramel, raisin, candi sugar, some lemon, liquor. Tastes medium fruity/caramel-like sweet and medium hoppy bitter; dry, alcoholic, bourbon-like finish. Full body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Inviting and tasty.
