In 2016, Euan, Dulcie, Jonny, and Tanya brought Volcan Wolf, a Black Berliner Weisse, to market. This tart & dark yet light and refreshing brew was named after the highest peak of the Galapagos. This shield volcano was given the name Wolf in honour of the German naturalist Theodor Wolf.

Pours a muddy brown.black with some cloudy, white head. Nose has a hop kick to start, then more classic stout, malt, toast, mild berry. Flavor is cherry, some pomegranate, some vegetal notes, malt, a little cola. Kind of all over the place.

330ml can. Dark, dark brown with a very lively tan head that fizzed away to nothing. Sour, fruity aroma, flavour is complex: sour, salty, caramel, fruit. Bit thin, and not to everyone’s taste, but I liked it

Black beer, very lively pour, beige head. Zesty, bready aroma. Taste is quite conflicted. In the first instant you get some dark, earthy malt and then it’s immediately followed up with sour, tart citrus. The sourness stops short of being overpowering but it is the overriding sensation and the one that lingers. This is one where I find it hard to score because it might be a great beer but it’s just not really to my taste. I don’t hate it, I just wouldn’t thank you for another.

Keg at the Rake. It pours murky dark brown - black with a quickly dissipating beige head. The aroma is tangy, dark fruits, berry skin, fruit cake, funk and cacao. The taste is crisp, tart, tangy, lactic acidity, earthy roast, berry skin, cranberry, raspberry pip, granny smith apple skin, earth and wood. Finish is dry and roasted. Light - medium body and moderate + carbonation. Strikes a nice balance. Pretty good stuff overall.

Bottle. Dark brown body with a thick beige head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of liquorice, Dr Pepper and brown sugar. Flavour of underripe plum and sour brambles. Thin body with a watery texture. Light fizz. Unusual and unique but not very easy to drink.
