2016 Magnum shared by Skrip on 6/10/17.
A bright golden and strawberry juice-colored body shows a minimal-to-light amount of haze and quite a large (for a sour), pink and beige head that is strongly retained.
Big, bright mix of both bacterial acid and boisterous fruit acids upon first sniff. They’ve got a lot of expression from the strawberries, which requires quite a bit of fruit and management. Light-hearted berry-like notes help downplay the strong lactic and moderate acetic character. As well, a strong cereal-like character asserts itself from the grain, adding rustic bread and other varied notes to the nose. Lingering vanilla, berry-like fruitiness and acetic acid with no alcohol or flaw.
A firm sourness, unsurprisingly, is recognized upon first sip. Lots of strawberry character, fruity, moderately acidic and with a fresh, vegetal character that works nicely with all of the bread, biscuit and cereal character from the mixed grain bill. Though natural, the carbonation is quite high and, unfortunately, pronounces the bacterial acidity even more so than it would normally creating a strong buildup of lactic and acetic acid on the palate that eventually leads to fatigue. Hopefully with another year or so this should soften nicely. It’s still got plenty of malt and fruit sugar to go the distance, and to that end, it does help balance this strong sourness, to an extent. Slick-to-soft, malty texture, somewhat broken up by the high carbonation but becoming quite rich as it warms and breathes, though the acidity never relents. Really high quality stuff with no flaw or alcohol. Like many American sours, it begs more time in barrel/bottle.
