"I think i'm getting the black lung pop. It's not very well ventilated down there" this really, really, ridiculously good looking sixth incarnation of our muchly-beloved peated stout (this year aged in Starward Whisky barrels) will leave you gasping for that last breath of clean air before succumbing to the intense chocolate, roasty, shmokin', whisky-y flavour.

(Bottle) Pours black with a stupid amount of head - it took me ten minutes to coax 330ml into two 500ml glasses - if I had a suitable glass I reckon the head would have been half a metre tall - very annoying - I want to drink it, not perform delicate decanting (and I was very careful after reading a previous rating). Nice aroma - smoky, boozy, whisky, maybe raisins. Fantastic palate - full bodied, oily, slightly sticky with gentle bright carbonation (at least after waiting for the head to settle.) Great taste too. Surprisingly, but pleasantly, sweet in a rich molasses way. Theres smokiness, dark chocolate, some raisin / date sweet and tangy fruitiness, and of course some alcohol and peat. Excellent (except the over-carbonation).

From a 330ml bottle on 27/9/2016. Pours close to balck with a medium to big fomay tan head. The nose is light smoke with some roasted malt and chocolate, with a hint of scotch. Flavour wise, there’s a fair dose of chocolate and caramel sweetness, and a bit of dark fruit, which is set off against some light roasty notes, some peat, and a touch of scotch booziness. The texture is thick and slick. Unfortunately it presents a touch over-carbed. That aside, it’s quite complex and enjoyable. Perhaps I’m less inclined to laud it because the Stillwater Surround I had the other day is a superior incarnation of a smoky stout.

This series has been running long enough that black lung has re-emerged in Australian coal workers, having been a distant memory when the series was new. Hilarious, eh Black with an inch of mid tan head. Aroma is not all that forthright and mainly whisky. There’s some mocha, earth, vanilla and bread too. Not much smoke. Silky texture, medium to low carbonation. Sweet with bitterness and a little alcohol creeping up nicely towards the end. Bready, berries, cream, mocha, vanilla, moderate roasted flavours. There’s a breathy lightness to the palate that I like but wonder a little whether it’s stouty enough. My second favourite of the series (after IV) so far.
