On tap at restaurant in Nyhavn, Copenhagen. Pours a hazy bronze colour with an off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine, peaches and some caramel and diacetyl. Flavour of peaches, pine, oat crackers, diacetyl and grass in the end. Has a slick mouth feel, medium body and a medium to heavy bitterness. Too bad with the diacetyl, but with a distinct bitter finish.

West Coast IPA launched in 2017 by the ‘craft’ division of Carlsberg, called Husbryggeriet Jacobsen and evidently referring to J.C. Jacobsen, Carlsberg’s founder. Medium sized, slowly breaking, snow white, small-bubbled head on a hazy amber-tinged peach blonde beer. Aroma of dried orange peel, sundried tomatoes, old biscuit, paprika powder, unsmoked cigarette tobacco, roasted peanuts, dried peach. Some fruitiness of dried peach and apple peel in the onset but relatively low in sweetness, touch unripe mandarin, lively and even stingy carbonation; full, rounded body, a tad powdery. Biscuity and lightly peanutty maltiness, soon bittered by orange pith- and white pepper-like hoppiness with an oniony edge. This bitterness nicely connects with the toasty aspect of the malts and though in the end a somewhat soupy, green vegetable-like aspect appears, the old-fashioned West Coast feel is actually surprisingly well conveyed here. Could have been more aromatic and perhaps even a tad less yeasty, but it is good to encounter one of these almost ‘anachronistic’ IPAs every now and then.
