Bottle from the brewery’s online shop. Black body with a beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of plum, Dr Pepper and red wine. Flavour of berries and bitter lemon. Medium body with a slick texture. Very fizzy. Sharp and unusual. Not totally convinced I liked it.

Bottle from the brewery online shop. Gusher. Pours dark aubergine with a rocky brown head. Sour plum and chocolate on the nose. Taste is sour fruit, light tar and roast. Sour linger. Odd.

Bottle shared with Holmen1 and JFE at Vaaland 10.09.22. Mahogany. Fairly persistent brown head and lacing. Aroma and taste hints of infection. Perhaps it is supposed to be that way, but it is not my taste. It’s reminiscent of Belgian bruin. Or perhaps it is in the tradition of stale beer.

Bottle from Beer Gonzo. It pours darkest brown to black with a sturdy tan head. The aroma is very jammy and tangy upfront, loads of damson and plum, vinous, black grape, toasty, rich roasted malt, liquorice allsorts, dull smoke and purple chewits. The taste is dry, bitter, rich roasted malt, earthy, charred wood, umami, liquorice, coffee grounds, bitter - sweet, D&B, then it gets rather fruity, tangy, jammy, vinous, tart, sour damson, plum, prune, toasty and a touch of alcohol with a toasty finish. Fulsome body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Super fruity stuff. Somehow works very well with the base beer. Kernel are out of control.

27th December 2021 Almost opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Nose immediately marks this off as something different from the normal Kernel dark beers, quite a pronounced jammy winey fruit over the normal Kernel dark malt niff. Palate is airy and semi dry, good fine carbonation. Mild dark malt cream, modest and mildly bitter dark chocolate and a touch of coffee. All of this plays second fiddle to the damson, which is bountiful and has a good bright fruitiness along with a surprising tartness that makes the mouth water. Never approaches acid mind. Finishes smooth with that winey vibe coming through from the nose along with some Damson jam. Really like the boldness of this one. Unapologetically fruity. Nicely done.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from the brewery taproom. Gusher! Pours black-brown with a billowing, foamy beige head. Lightly sweet with modest ashy roast, tangy berries, earth, light acidity, scorched earth, coffee. Medium bodied with active, massaging carbonation. Dry, bitter and ashy finish, more baking cocoa, dried berries, mild tartness. Nice one.
