Evil Cousin IIPA with habaneros

We love the flavor of habanero peppers. The flesh has a beautiful tropical fruit note masked by the heat. OK, so we got really geeky about peppers and found out that the University of New Mexico bred a special habanero with no heat. So... we found the seeds, grew the pepper, and then skillfully blended hot habaneros with non-hot to make this amazingly balanced pepper beer. Yes, it still has a good amount of heat, but the flavor of the habanero comes through too. Yes, it is a lot to go through, but hey, this is how we roll.

Tap. Pours hazy golden, medium off white head, great lacing. Aroma is pretty chili forward. Flavor is light plus sweet, medium spicy, habanero. Pepper pretty much dominates flavor profile. Medium body, 🎧 creamy mouthfeel. Gimmick.

On tap, quite clear very light pale golden with a fine even white head. Light pale malt aromas. Quite big pepper sizzle in the flavors. Actually tastes pretty good. Decent heat and smooth body. Some sweetness as well to help with the heat. Not bad.

Taster at the brewery. Clear yellow with pristine white head. While generally not a fan of pepper beers as they are usually overdone, this struck a nice balance and the habaneros provided nice heat and spice flavor without taking over the beer. Solid.

Primo Diablo, sample kindly shared by Ai at the Heretic Tap Takeover Event, clear gold with a thick head of foam, it has a surprisingly hoppy fruit aroma with just a dash of earthy habanero. The taste gives you that habanero burn but it is much more balanced than most chili beers and thus more drinkable. Solid which for me who’s not a fan of spicy food is saying something.

On tap at Apex, pours a clear pale golden with a small white head. Nose brings out loads of jalapeo upfront, with citrus hops in there too. Flavour is massive on the jalapeo - the hops are there but buried underneath. A little too much of the pepper for me, but it's okay.

Golden color, white head. The mouth has an excellent malt back bone with tons of tangerines and a great great spicy kick that hits the aback of the throat. Really interesting habenero character. I love the spice, but think another pepper would work better. Really well constructed and lovely beer. The spice just lingers and lingers. Awesome.
