Cask gravity at Pig’s Ear 2015. It pours darkest ruby with a small beige head. The nose is bitter-sweet, umami, earthy roast, coffee, charred wood and dried fruits. The taste is toasty, earthy, charred wood, leather, scorched earth, dirt, light astringency, ash, liquorice and hard-roasted coffee with a pretty dry finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and slick mouth-feel. A bit harsh if anything. Not sure on this one.

Cask at Pigs Ear 2015, day 1 - London. Pours clearish brown with a tan foam head. Heavy, fresh coffee in the aroma, and little else of note. Light sweet flavour with more hearty coffee character to dominate, and secondary notes of baking cocoa, earth and dried fruits. Light bodied, oily, with fine carbonation; decent condition. Drying in the finish with more continuing rich coffee. Not bad if you enjoy a cup of coffee.

Bottle from Hot Numbers Coffee (Trumpington Road). Espresso black with a lovely big tan head. Muted coffee scent, a bit metallic, malt, dark chocolate, a bit of corn syrup aroma. Divine strong coffee taste. Slight espreso bitterness burn near the back of the tongue. Full palate but slightly flatter than it looks. Very good, I’m not a huge breakfast stout fan but I could get used to this, really easily.

Bottle from Beautiful Beers, Bury St Edmunds. Pours almost black with initially big and bubbly beige colour head. Delightful aroma of roasted coffee and chocolate. Medium bitterness and body, slick texture, carbonation a little lively as stouts go. Enjoyable beer.
