This is a dark beer, but it tastes surprisingly light and fruity. Clean, restrained malt flavours come from de-husked dark malt, which lays a platform for the sort of hoppiness usually found not in a dark ale but in an American-style IPA. Aromas of tropical fruit, resinous pine, and more, emerge from a medley of highly flavoured American hops. Style - "Black IPA". If you are drinking this beer after 2019, this will be rebadged Peaky Blinder Black IPA which is now produced at our Flookburgh site.

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.6%. Very dark reddish brown colour, large off-white head. Fresh aroma of fruity and piney hops, notes of tropical fruits on a background of lightly roasted malts. Fruity and piney flavour on a more distinct background of roast malts with dry coffee notes, resinous and bitter finish.

Keg at the Beer Hall, Staveley. Liquorice black, opaque. A massive yet loose cream-coloured head. Roast coffee, tar liquorice and plum in the aroma. Taste is bitter and slightly rough at first, but then it settles into a plummy bittersweetness, where the roasted malt is offset by the bright hop notes. Finish is, for me, a bit too bitter and burnt. Carbonation, sharp but not heavy, lifts the mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

330ml bottle from Ales by Mail. BBE 10/17. Pours dark brown, almost black, with a foamy head. Aroma of roasty malts, herbal hops, pine, citrus, resin and ashy notes. Taste is slightly ashy and roasty with some herbal hops, grass, pine and resin. Finish is ashy, slightly burnt and roasty with some herbal hoppiness, grass, pine and resinous notes. Okay, but slightly too ashy and burnt.

330ml bottle. Almost black colour with ruby glimmer and average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting and lacing, beige head. Citrusy and piney, hoppy aroma, slightly cautious, roasty dark malty background with hints of coffee, notes of lemon, hints of lemon tea, a touch of lime. Taste is citrusy hoppy, roasty dark malty basis with a chalky touch and hints of stale coffee, some lemon, lime and pine; slightly ashy finish. Not fully satisfying.

On keg at the Hanging Bat. Appearance - close to opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - equal quantities of oranges and chocolate. Nice. Taste - similarly to the nose, it’s nicely in that narrow black ipa zone. Marmalade shred and chocolate. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Overall - nice example of the style.
