On tap at Rattle n Hum - East, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out smoked malt and light dark fruits upfront. Flavour is unusual, with a nice mix of bacon, smoke, tart dark fruits and caramel. Wouldn't think this would normally work, but it's quite intriguing. Solid stuff.

Draught at Return of the Belgian Beerfest, 9/17/16.
Dark amber-mahogany, good clarity, it seems, with a dark, ashen-beige head atop showing moderate retention for the style.
The smoke is there immediately though it’s not too intense or heavy on the salty bacon aspects. Meaty somewhat but more dry with charred notes and light pepper phenolics. It mixes with a melanoidin-soaked malt sweetness boasting rather straightforward caramel richness. Some alcohol fumes noteable yet not offensive with strong bread undertones and light licorice and prune dryness lingering. So a bit all over the place though it doesn’t seem sloppy, really. The smoke definitely takes a lot of the attention off of the Belgian aspects, though I’m unsure whether that’s good or not.
Smokey up front, again not a huge intensity but with light meat, char and salt. There’s a lot of sourdough-like breadiness through the middle with sweet caramel to balance. Lots of melanoidin and other phenols on the finish contributing a dry, fruity and peppery character replete with prune, black pepper, light clove and alcohol. A bit too much astringent character lingering but with an ample but low carbonation that is fairly engaging. Slick-to-malty texture could use a touch more depth/softness and it just needs more Quad-like expression overall, despite being well-brewed for the most part.

Tap at Rattle n Hum reddish brown pour small head. Nose is light smoke and red fruit. Tastes of dried fruit, tobacco, plums, hint of molasses and faint smoke. Smooth palate. Slightly dull overall but nothing unpleasant.
