Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten began as Golden Rye Pale Ale, part of a series of beers that explored the use of rye malt at our pub, the Eccentric Café. With wonderfully bitter citrus notes, resinous hop aromas and earthy overtones, this dry-hopped Pale Ale doesn't leave a lot of room for you to wonder if you'll love it.

Unexpectedly sweet, giving up a corn-laced pale malt front with a modest piney hop bitterness underneath. Grows dry towards the middle, a slight citric hoppiness underscoring an emerging spicy rye back end, yet the finish lightens up, bringing back the bright grainy sweetness against a lingering bitter fade. Not terrible, just bland and too friendly, even for a Spring beer.

$1.67 bottle from Trader Joe’s Charlottesville. Pours golden with a small off-white head. Aroma is lemon, toast, light earth. Flavor is bitter lemon, slightly lemon-pledey, grass, grain, and light floral hops.

2017 fresh batch re-rate: On tap at Mellow. Good floral nose with some citrus and grain. Clean and crisp with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Peppery rye in the finish. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, sweet malt, rye, light moderate hoppy, fruity hops. Flavor is moderate sweet and light moderate bitter with a average to long duration, rye, sweet malt, pale malt, fruity hops, light citrus.
