Originating in Mexico, hot chocolate has evolved as its been adopted all over the world. This brown ale is a nod an early iteration of the traditional favorite, made with a bit of spice, deep chocolate, & lactose. (Oh, and drink it cold. The ‘hot’ refers to the spice, not the temp!)

Dark brown almost black with a small tan head. Aroma is chocolate fudge, vanilla and roasted grains. Taste is also chocolate fudge, vanilla and roasted grains and yes there is a little heat.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, three to four centimetre tall, microfoamed and large tan head that stays afloat nicely. Aroma of super rich vanilla, lactose, cream, chocolate, light spices and a touch of canella and chiles here, at least in the nose - very aromatic. Full-bodied; Very rich malts, vanilla, lactose and even marshmallow notes show at first with a big spice component that has the allspice, nutmeg and especially canella here, but the heat from the chiles is very evident here - not at first, but prolonged, on the lips. Aftertaste is strong from the malts, with a very nice kick of heat, a lot of spices and a supportive, but not cloying amount of lactose and sugar at the end that provides nice balance. Overall, a nice, rich and robust brown that sort of tastes like a porter, with a lot of spice components, bunches of unassuming heat and a nice sweetness - well done, very nicely executed! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Total Wine in Gainesville, Virginia on 06-March-2021 for US$4,29 as my 18th beer of the 2021 Advent Calendar, sampled a few days late at my house here in Washington on 23-December-2021.

I like the heat, but otherwise this pint makes for rough going. American brown ale bitterness doesn’t pair well with such abundant lactose, giving a saccharine edge to the chocolate, vanilla, and caramel notes. Finishes with lingering spice, but the whole beer comes across disjointed.
