Bottle at Taps Beer Bar, Changkat, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a murky dark amber with a thin broken white head. The aroma is malt, tropical fruit citrus, woody resin hop, some alcohol. The flavour is moderate bitter light sweet with a rich, fruity, resin hop, alcoholic bitter palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Nice enough but more hops are not always best.

Medium amber color. Spicy hops, crystal malts, medium body, cotton candy and apples in the mouth. Good malty backbone. Nothing wrong but I could have predicted what this beer would be like before I even opened it.

Bottle from Albertsons. I’d been avoiding Rogue, for no apparent reason. This is a pretty solid IPA. Medium amber, slight haze, instant fluffy head. While the hop aroma comes on strong, the malt backbone I s still in evidence. Same with the taste. Hops up front, malts in the middle, nice stinging finish. Tasty, but with a potent hops kick.

What you’d expect from a Rogue DIPA, with all the malt and hops still playing second fiddle to Sir Pacman. And, while I’m a fan of their always-recognizable flavor profile, I do wish Rogue would make their proprietary hop celebration ales a bit more focused on the hops. 8 Hop is tasty, just a bit hot, with a bitter, resinous finish that still doesn’t really draw any of their homegrown hop varieties into focus. It’s a big, messy, joyous hop party too high on its own pedigree to truly grow outstanding. But I’m not gonna quit drinking it.

22oz bomber pours with a clear copper body that supports a dirty tan head that has wisps of brown here and there. The modest aroma comes across pretty malty for an IPA where I get timid levels of grassy, herbal, floral and earthy tea like hoppy notes. The taste delivers the same pulse of malty sweetness but as my palate adjusts I start to pick up spicy grassy hops, floral hops and near resiny pine hops. It gets into a decent degree of hop bitterness to midway and then into the finish it picks up a nice earthy tea drying hoppiness. Pretty nice.

Bottle from The Gull, North Vancouver
The bottle, strangely, has quite some sediment. Intense, bright amber color, hazy, with compact head. Surely this is a malty example, some caramel, enough flavor depth, and the hopping is a bit resiny and orangey, not the highlight of this beer.
I have no way to know how old this bottle is, probably not very fresh, but it’s still a very good malty beer.
