Delicious, refreshing and unexpected, Schwarzbier is the Cinderella at the craft beer ball; tragically left behind while other, lesser styles whoop it up. Dark and clear, it has a lightly roasty, malt-forward character with surprisingly low bitterness, and hints of caramel and coffee. Fresh and smooth with a lively carbonation, this bubbly brew is the belle of the ball.

330ml can from Beer52 - Beautiful deep brown body with a lush lacing thick beige top. Easy going roasted coffee notes, with a slight ashy tinge to the hops. Mouthfeel is silky and lifts it to the next level.

Friday evening, 28th February 2025, Margie is out having a girly meal out and I'm home alone with Bertie (my 12 year old Collie) and having a mini beer tasting. First up is a 330ml can of this, I've poured it (it'll be twice) into an old Gaffel Kolsch glass just for laughs and giggles. It looks fine, nice clean cola brown with a slight ruby hue, on top a beige head that tried to last on each pour. Semi sweet with a coffee and chocolate leaning, some mild caramel traces too. I wonder who actually brews it? To be fair it's OK and it helps my Scottish beer rating ticking along I suppose.

Dark brown pour with nice beige top; good. Aroma of brown bread crusts, roast, caramel, hint of liquorice; decent. Taste follows - has a roasty character upfront with some caramel, liquorice spice, and a fading light dark malt finish which disappointed slightly. Light to mid bodied, semi-drying; fine carbonation; all works well for the style.

Can from Beer52. It pours darkest brown to black with a thick, khaki head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, caramel/toffee, coffee, dark chocolate, dark roasted malt and praline. The taste is dry, pretty bitter up front (in a good way), dark roasted malt, charred, ashy, dark chocolate, touch of caramel and coffee grounds with a dry roasted malt. Average body and moderate carbonation. Serviceable schwarzbier.
