Cask halfpint at the Brewery Shades, Crawley. 6.6%. Black color, small beige head. Aroma of liquorice and wood. Distinct and slightly sweet flavour of liquorice, tar and wood, also salt of hartshorn and one spice that I can’t pinpoint. The hops are too moderate.

Cask gravity at 32nd WHOAF. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is rich, roasty, earth, tar, treacle, charred wood, fudge and chocolate . The taste is smooth, roasty, cocoa, charry wood, toast, tar, treacle, spice, coffee, ash and dirt with a dry, woody finish. Fullish body and fine carbonation. Punchy stuff. Nice work.

Gravity cask @ NWAF 2014, Derby. Black and opaque. Liquorice, coal smoke and dark chocolate aroma. Intense bitterness in the initial taste; very smoky. Sweeter finish followed by a bittersweet aftertaste. This is a naughty drink, and just shades it as beer of the festival for me.
