Handpull cask from the Three Horseshoes, Stapleford. Tawny brown with a tiny bit of head. The aroma lowers my expectation: a bit of caramel and crystal malt just like the description said. Meh. I take a sip and change my mind. It starts sweet and a trifle yeasty but soon changes. There’s a nice sharp woody bitter, underpinned by malty notes but still packed with flavour. The finish is long and bitter, but there’s still a note of sugary agave nectar in the aftertaste. I like Nene Valley’s more forward-looking beers but usually struggle with their more traditional stuff. This is an exception.
