Unusual and playful this half-breed brew begins with a rush of smoky, almost savory, aromas and flavors. The distinctive campfire smokiness of a rauchbier lingers and beings to reveal the rich and velvety malt smoothness of a double bock with a notes of toffee and caramel. This roguish brew transforms from its bold start to a hearty and satisfying finish.

22 oz. bottle, pours a hazy amber with a medium beige head. Aroma of light smoke, red fruits and toasted nuts. Flavour is lightly smoky, with smoky caramel malt, light toasted nuts and a bit of sweetness. Very weird, but fairly well-constructed. Decent stuff, though it has some jagged edges

Pours deep brown with a tall, long lasting off-white head. Light malt aroma. The flavor is sweet and malty, much more here than in the aroma. The smoke is much too subtle here IMO. Good Bock in any case.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter. Batch #1. Pours a clear dark ruby/amber with about a finger of thick white head. Aroma is mostly smoke with some caramel, wood and dark fruits. Taste is light sweet. Caramel with smoke, wood, cherry and alcohol. Full bodied with a thick and sticky texture. Soft carbonation and a long finish. Overall, great. Would be great to pair with some BBQ burgers.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a note of smoked bacon with some beef jerky and a good amount of roast. Flavor is similar with smokey meats and grains that mellow towards the finish.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear reddish copper color with a nice 2 finger dense cream colored head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Some decent spotty lacing on the glass, with a good amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of caramel, wood, smoked meat, molasses, raisin, biscuit, earth, pepper, herbal, and toffee. Very nice aromas with nice balance and complexity. Taste of caramel, smoke, wood, toast, molasses, raisin, prune, earth, pepper, toffee, biscuit, and herbal spiciness. Lingering notes of smoke, wood, molasses, caramel, raisin, bread, toast, earth, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance of smoky flavors with the fruitiness and malts. No cloying sweetness at all, fairly clean on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is quite nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a warming present on the finish. Very smooth to sip on. Overall this is a damn nice smoked Doppelbock. Great flavor balance and smoothness. I really have no complaints on this one. Really well done and very enjoyable.

Half liter bottle pours brown with deep ruby red hues and a tan like head of foam. The aroma offers up dark fruity esters notes like prunes and dried cherries as well as smokiness and some brown sugar notes. The taste is big and bold and a bit creamy with brown sugar coated prunes and cherries and then quickly rolling into chocolate malts mixing with firm levels of smoke and bacon like goodness. The smoke gets nearly robust to midway and tried to head into the ashy realm but the big sweetness seems to keep it from getting there. Wow, big bold sweet and smoky and its richness pairs well with a meal rather than downing this without food.

Bottle. Brown in color with small white head, mild retention. Large amount of smoke and mild sweet malt in the nose. Flavor has a malty backbone with tones of smoke, caramel malt and a hint of yeast. Smoke is not overpowering and is a nice complement to the sweetness. The Smoke / “rauchbier” is not something I drink much of. Mostly because I don’t like drinking a campfire. However, I like the sweetness that SA uses to balance this brew. It’s decent and worth a try. ABV is only slightly noticeable.
