Café Phoenix is a rich, dark and smooth Porter with flavours of caramel, toffee and coffee. It blends seven malts, with each adding to the beer’s complexity and depth of flavour, from the sweet caramel notes of Crystal through to the roasted flavours from Brown, Chocolate and Carafa III. Single-hopped with UK Phoenix, a hop that adds flavours of molasses and chocolate, Café Phoenix is accentuated with a coffee blend exclusive to Brains, selected for its mellow but full flavour.

Dark ruby brown, beige dense head
Aroma of soft roast, soft caramel malts
Taste of sweet caramel malts, soft toffee, no burnt roast notes, soft sweet bit artificial coffee
Palate - Thin body, fairly sweet. Finish of soft sweet malts
Overall - Not a great porter, found the coffee somewhat synthetic in this, but OK overall

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - toffee and chocolate. Some booze and stewed fruits too. Taste - toffee and chocolate again. Biscuits lurking. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a paradoxically sweet yet dry finish. Overall - complex and good.

Cask @ Old Wellington, Manchester. Very dark ruby red with a thin bubbly-smooth head. Has lovely smooth caramel and toffee notes as advertised with only a small burnt aroma and texture, but one that really adds to the ale. Has a fine smoothness in the palate with coffee evident here too.
