Chestnut and Hoppy
5 different malts and a blend of 3 full flavoured hop varieties means this is going to be complex and full flavoured ale. The addition of Munich malt and the oats make the beer smooth and full-bodied. The hops contribute blueberry, passionfruit and orange aromas. This beer has a real depth of flavour but it is beautifully balanced making it very quaffable.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Munich, Golden Naked Oats.
Hops: First Gold, Mosaic, Simcoe

Cask @ GBBF 2015. Pours a pale amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty caramel aroma. Fruity malty caramel hoppy flavor. Has a fruity malty caramel finish.

Cask (handpump) @ GBBF 2015, Great British Beer Festival, London Olympia, Hammersmith Road, London, England W14 8UX. [ As Rebellion Jolly Roger ].Clear medium amber color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, strawberry, marmelade, sweet malt. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter with a average duration, caramel, marmelade. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat. [20150811]

Cask at the Bootlegger, High Wycombe, 12/09/15. Chestnut brown with a decent light beige covering. Nose is toffee, biscuit malt, earthy hop, bitter orange. Taste comprises caramel, toffee, biscuit crumble, earthy hops, dark fruit rinse. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close. Decent bitter with a hoppy leaning.

Cask from the Dayla real ale stand at the Bucks County Show. Deep amber with a beige head and a moderate sparkle. Absolutely superb condition- well done to Dayla, can’t be easy to do at a one day show with limited set up time! Big malty hit up front- a darker malty bitter seems an unusual choice for a summer monthly special, but is rather welcome after all the hoppy golden ales of the last couple of months. There’s a little nuttiness too. The hops contribute light fruits- orange in particular- but also a rather heavy-handed bitterness in the finish that doesn’t suit the malts. That aside it’s not a bad beer at all, just not as good as the malty whiff and first sip had me hoping.

Cask gravity at the brewery and a bottle at home. (Cask was fresher and better.) Mostly clear reddy/ amber coloured pour with a loose greyish head. Aroma is toffee and berry, light sulphur, grassy notes. Flavour is composed of nice layers , nutty, caramel , biscuity malts, berry, hedgerow, damp hay, little grassy. Palate is semi-sweet, medium and decent cask condition. Ok bitter.

GBBF Day 1. Cask. Lightly hazy amber beer, residual pale cream colour head. Palate is light with modest fine carbonation. Tangy caramel malts. Some tangy marmalade. Whisper of lemon. Light semi dry finish. Okay.

At GBBF. Cask conditioned bitter with loose, off-white, coarse but sticky head and deep orangey amber colour. Aroma pleasantly malty, toasted bread, caramel, hints of dried berries, peach, faint passionfruit accent, some ’good’ iron, flowers, sweet strawberry and melon. Subdued fruity taste, rounded and smooth caramel maltiness, bit metallic, toasted with a dull sourish, almost wheaty touch, very nutty (roasted chestnuts) with a mild, subtle floral hop bitterishness in the finish, but ending in juicy malts altogether. Nice and quaffable example of the style.

From cask. Pours hazy brown to orange with a small tan head. Aroma is toasted malty and slight fruity. Bitter, fruity, toasted and dry. Mild toasted and bitter finish.
