Cask, gravity dispensed, at the Spring Festival at the Rose & Crown, Sandhurst. Dark chestnut in colour with a thin beige head; lightly smoked aroma; more pronounced smoky taste; with some dry spicy hops to finish. Very pleasant.

Cask @ Coach and Horses, Shrewsbury [280115]
Very dark brown, dense thin oatmeal head, good lacing
Aroma of sweet dark malts, soft toffee, some odd dark fruits, slightly sour
Taste of soft dark malts, quite smoky, some soft dark toffee, dab of dark fruits, tad sour though, flavour not that great
Palate - Thin body, soft sweet then bitter roast. Finish has more smoked malt, fairly smoky linger, dry, long bitter linger. Finish isn’t good either
Overall - A bit thin, beer seems old and not in great condition. Not enjoying this.

Bottle from SarkyNorthener drunk on first class train back to London. Thanks Martin. Black dark brown beer lasting beige head. Decent slightly exciting initial flavour. Promises dark choc and dark cherry liquer. Some light ashtray smoke. But this is about the lovely dark choc and the fantastic dark fruits. Very dry on the finish. I mean it is excellent. Racy. Listening to Bryan Ferry these foolish things this beer this slightly delayed first class train carriage. Perfect match. Thanks to Martin, Rich and Jim Green for such a great day. Good beer. Put a smile on my face.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark brown with a reddish hue and a bubbly off white head. The aroma is light malt, light hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light smooth, light smoke, roasted malt, woody hop, light spice pepper bitter palate and a short bitter finish. Light bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask at the Milton Keynes Beer Festival 2013. Poured a near black colour with a thin beige head. Aroma of smoked peat, molasses and dark fruit. Fairly full mouth feel. Cured meat flavours with dried fruit and just a touch of iodine, but not in a bad way. Finish was very bitter burnt and smoky malts. Nice stuff.

9 pint mini keg, from the brewery, shared on the train from Hereford to Inverness, cheers to SP 18/10/13. Dark mahogony brown with a moderate tan covering that dissipates edgeward. Nose is subtle smoke, light medicinal notes, dark toffee, charred wood, smoked ham. Taste comprises light cocoa, toffee, charred timbers, dark fruits, fruit loaf. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry smoked finale. Decent smoked porter.

On the 3rd Oct 2013 my wife and I had 22 half-pints between us at the 35th Telford Beer Festival: this was one of those 22. Hand-pulled, this was one dark smelly brew: smoked German Ham, smoky bacon, you choose, this was really, really smoky. Reminded me of trips to Bamberg in fact. I struggle to embrace the beers of Bamberg and both my wife and I struggled with this, we knew what was coming, but it just wasn’t our thing. A bit thin for the mega flavours and too smoked for us. Had another hand-pulled half-pint on 22nd Nov 2014: not the same beer, nowhere near as much smokiness from the brew. Score not changed though!
