There's a moment when you have to choose whether to be silent or to stand up.- Malala

Let us use our voices to make sure that those who are silenced can be heard. Introducing our version of a Schwarzbier, or black lager, a beer which certainly speaks with conviction. With a base of Pils, debittered roast malt, 50% munich malt and a touch of caramalt, this beer is as smooth as a ribbon of velvet dark, gently roasty and ultra-mega-drinkable. Hopped with Magnum and Mittelfruh, this is an absolute classic of the lager universe!

Keg draught at Tønne, Leicester. Black with a smattering of uneven khaki head, leaving good lacing. Malty aroma, ash, berry, red grape and a little coffee in the aroma. The taste is bittersweet with an emphasis on the bitterness. Black malt, light smoke, bitter chocolate. Light to medium body with heavy tight carbonation. Loving it.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from OG Clapton Craft. Pours clear black-brown with a fading, creamy tan head. Medium sweet flavour with pleasant brown bread, toasted biscuits, raisiny accents, a little earth and roast. Light in body with average carbonation. Finishes with more toasted malts, biscuits, a nip of cocoa. Nice beer, nothing flashy.

440ml can from Redland Stores, Bristol. Near black in colour, with a frothy, off-white, head. Aroma of bready malts, liquorice and dark berries. Flavour was sweet, with some brown sugar and ripe malts, before a fairly soft finish. Enjoyable.
