Having disappeared for all the wrong reasons, it’s official… Porters are back! Our offering is all about chocolate malt with sympathetic hop additions. Pronounced yet elegant, this is truly a food beer. The roasted flavours will complement anything with a degree of caramelisation and charring. From crème brulee to seared scallops, this beer brings the thunder.

Cask at the Fell Bar, Kendal. Very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Tastes of black coffee and chocolate with quite a heavy roastiness. There's a hint of blackcurrant in the background and a slightly dry finish. It's a bit too burnt for my liking, but still quite nice.

Gravity cask at the Blue Boar, Leicester. Dark brown with a loose beige head. Chocolate, yeast extract and coffee overtones in the nose, with earthy malt. Bittersweet in the taste, turning to a more standard bitter in the finish. Body's a bit thin but that's okay. A tasty traditional porter.

Can – gift from a friend (suspect bought in Keswick). This had been stored in my “cellar” for several weeks, but was still very lively when poured. [ Strangely can seemed to be much colder than cellar temperature as well ]. Anyway, pours very dsark reddish brown with a creamy head that soon dissipates. Not much nose – I can smell the aluminium can more ! Typically porterish malt, toffee and chocolate notes dominant at first, but later acidic flavours like pear and cough mixture start coming through. Soft carbonation with a drying finish. Pleasant but not outstanding.
