Musashi Black IPA is not just dark in color, it is thick and roastywith a strong malt backbone. Toasted and dark crystal malts blend with the hoppy bitterness and character of magnum and perle to create hints of toffee and black licorice.

50cl bottle thanks to David. Appearance - like a coffee with a big frothy crema head. Nose - liquorice into tar. Taste - loads of liquorice, mountain herbs. Booze. Palate - medium to full bodied with a big boozy middle section that then leads into a finish that lasts for ages and eventually dries out. Overall - this is delicious but style-wise this is a hopped dry stout, in my opinion.

Large sample during a Beer and Indian Food evening at The Clay Oven, Irvine Orange County on 14th July 2014. Looked good and interesting: it was in fact both good and interesting. Poured a dark, deep brown with full tanned head that hung around. Toffee sweetness in both the aroma and taste of this malty IPA (is that allowed?) that has a good hop presence but is second fiddle to the maltiness that gives the beer it’s colour and most of the flavouring/aromas. I am no regular Black IPA drinker so can not really compare this with a host of other tastings, but I thought this different and well made, no matter what style it is supposed to be (medium to thin Stout like in my opinion).

Bottle at the Black (IPA) Friday tasting, from Public Beer & Wine Long Beach, 09/05/14. Light black with a good sized tan head that retains. Nose is light roast, pine, earthy, light fart, hint of hops. Taste comprises bitter roast, pine, earthy cocoa, light hop and tropical pangs. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light hop bitterness. So so CDA.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to my CDA comrade C-Dog. Pours deep brown with a frothy, yellow-beige head. The nose has well toasted brown bread, toasted pine, old grapefruit. Light to medium sweet flavor with dry chocolate, bitter earth, cocoa, dried fruits. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Earthy bitter finish with further baking cocoa, roast, charred pine. So so. Pretty dirty and gritty.

Bottle at Bruce’s. It pours darkest brown with a medium beige head. The nose is roasted malt, cocoa, earth, dirt and caramel. The taste is bitter, toasty, resin, pine needles, grapefruit, peppery, tar and dirt with a lingering bitter finish. Medium+ body and moderate carbonation. Pretty alright,
