Gerboise Rouge translates from French as "Red Desert Rat" and, whether intended or not, the name is apropos. In 1960, with knowledge of the perilous repercussions attributed to atmospheric testing growing (the US would cease these sorts of tests just 2 years later), the French government injudiciously began their first series of atmospheric nuclear tests. In an attempt to mimic the conditions created by the US at the Nevada Test Site, these tests were conducted in the Sahara Desert of Algeria. That parallel to NV was a wicked one so we attempt to be more principled in return by taking a French farmhouse ale and aging it in red wine barrels with a touch of hibiscus. The result is a slightly dry brew that one may find reminiscent of a mild rosé wine. "Rouge" was the 3rd of the French atmospheric nuclear tests but just the 2nd in our much more peaceful and appurtenant "Gerboise" series.

Orange gold with a medium sized soapy white head. Merlot, mustiness, yeast and perfume. Long finish. Medium body.

Half goblet @Able Baker Vegas. Opaque, dusty second run tea. Sharp floral, Violet, grape. Tart, old wine, faint sour, mellow oxidation, sharp malt, pith finish. Not a fun experience. Dreg pour? Ugh.

On tap at Able Baker, pours a clear copper golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out some oak, light berries and a hint of vinous character. Flavour is much the same, with oak and light vinous character, followed by gentle rustic farmhouse character. The fruit is a bit muted, but the oak and wine character is pleasant albeit muted. Good stuff.

Sampled from the tap at the brewery. Pours a clear amber rose with a white head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has light sweet grains and straw with flora and a red wine note supporting. Flavor has light red wine with flora, straw and a bit of sweet grain backing.
