Barrel Aged Barley Wine

The base of this blend is our Award Winning Barley Wine – Woolly Bugger – aged in Tawny Port and Bourbon Barrels. It was then blended with fresh Abbey Quad to become Port of Shadows. Port of Shadows docks Tawny Port, Barley Wine, and Abbey Quad side by side: each emerging distinct within the blend, but also presenting a remarkable synergy. Expect flavours of baked cherries, figs, dates, treacle, sultana raisin, and a hint of mandarin orange in this deceptively drinkable blend.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Dark mahogany colour; compact beige head. Weird smell, pork meat, light spices. Sweet caramel flavour, a bit jammy (this could be from the porto barrel), warming alcohol.
Not bad.

473 ml can. Pours a deep dark mahogany with moderate head. Aromas of mineral water, caramel, nougat, oaky port, and toasted malts. Flavors follow same; with a little vinous oak and dusty dark fruit. Quite dry with an odd mineral/metallic element. OK but pales in comparison with Woolly Bugger.

473mL can, pours an opaque muddy dark mahogany brown with a small beige head. Nose is somewhat syrupy, with lots of caramel, lightly tart, sweet red wine, some bourbon, and a muddy earthiness. Flavour is cloyingly sweet, with plenty of bubblegum, caramel, toffee, tons of sugars, and subdued red wine and bourbon barrels. Way too sickly sweet, which drowns out anything else about this. Agreed with the other ratings -- the blend with the quad doesn't seem to have been a good move. Messy, sweet, and thus difficult to drink.

16oz @ Ryan's. Appearance: dark copper with a tan head. Aroma: caramel, dark fruits, some barrel notes. Taste: along the same lines, a bit boozy. Finished with weird bitterness. Overall: meh.

Poured from 473mL can. Amber with small beige head. Oak, bubble gum, port, hint of dark fruits, just a mess of throwing spaghetii at the wall to see what stuck and guess what.... nothing... nothing did... it just left a big mess.

Amber-brown colour. Not much head. Fruity, orangey but also a little bit vegetal. Some toffeeish sugars on the nose as well. Some bubblegum phenol stuff, too, which is unfortunate. So they're trying to add a little something to a dullish (but not too bad) bw, and it kind of messes with the whole balance. Comes across harsh and with an odd sense of balance. Probably wasn't a great bw, even with the treatments, but adding the phenol bomb didn't help at all. Should have just rode it out without the blending, honestly. I don't think they asked the right questions here.
