This is the next beer in the Temporal Void Series, an exploration of strong barrel-aged beers. C.R. Novum is the second and final bottle releasing this Sunday, January 29th at noon at @containerbrewing. 12.51% abv. 500 bottles available with a limit of 4 per person. Please BYOBag - ideally cloth and reusable. As with previous Void sales, this is a single day pop-up release.
This is the second adambier I've bottled up, and I'm really happy with how the base is developing. For those of you who aren't aware, adambier is a historical style that's kinda like a mildly smokey old ale. It's dark but not overtly roasty, with a bit of phenolics from the peated malt it's brewed with. Historically the beer was probably a bit sour but rest assured, my version is based on the modern interpretation as brewed and revitalized by Portland legends @hairofthedogbrewing.
So, the first adambier release was vanilla brandy barrel-aged. This one is from a special single-barrel 12-year rum from the island of St. Croix. I was really impressed with the aromas coming off the barrel when they landed, tons of butterscotch and spice. These flavours plays really nicely with the mild smoke and molasses-y kinda treacle-esque old dusty book and leather thing the adambier has going on. I think the two vibe really nicely together.

Dark brown. Thin head. Big rum aroma, lots of alcohol, fruitiness. On the palate, this is quite boozy, a bit harsh in that respect. Certainly leaner than one might expect from a rum barrel adambier (this being my first rum barrel adambier, mind you). Decent, but the balance is a bit off, both in the thinnish base and in the rum barrel, which is always a tough one to work with.

330mL bottle, pours jet black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out gentle rum, medium roast and some muddled earthiness. Flavour is full of roasted malt, soft but complex rum, light vanilla and some dark sugars. Medium-bodied, with dark sugars and rum on the finish. Good but lacking complexity and depth.

330 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with sight tan head. Aromas of caramel, chocolate nougat, bourbon (yep even though rum barrel…) and soft toasty malts. Flavors follow same. Still some bourbon barrel but also fruity, oaky rum on the finish. Lots of nice barrel notes. Tasty.

Poured from 330mL bottle @ Weathered 2023. Dark brown with small beige head. Some nice rum barrel, hint of caramel, prefer this over the VB Novum, a bit more depth.
