Like its namesake the Carrack, this fine American Imperial Red Ale was designed to forge ahead into uncharted territories. You see, it has the gravity and feist of an Imperial IPA, yet it is balanced with a sweeter, caramel brown sugar profile, resulting in a far more mellifluous and tenebrous hue. The result is satisfying and rewarding. The great ship was otherwise known as "The Beast of Burden." So too, is this fine ale.

This brew is a hazy brownish-amber color with a medium thick light beige head that recedes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of rye malt, hops and fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, resiny hops and fruit. The finish is rye malt up front with a piney hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Strong marigold, pencil shaving, and pine needle nose. Cloudy rust, thin yellow head. Intense marigold and pencil shavings, overripe orange underneath and toward the end. Full body, moderate carbonation, boozy. Hop forward and strong, not as malty or balanced as I hoped.

Sweet with plums in finish. Alcohol slightly pushing through, gently. Well hopped, balanced brew. Great stuff.

355ml bottle. Barely clear, deep amber colour with small, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Piney, hoppy aroma, a fruity and earthy touch of rye. Taste is biting bitter hoppy, warming and slightly biting alcoholic, sweet malty body, an earthy rye touch survives; oily texture, sticky palate. Cocky and flossy instead of delicate and subtle.
