Mermaids, those mysterious aquatic lovelies, have popped up all over the world in legend since 1000 BC. No scientific evidence has ever surfaced to support their existence, but we’re not ones to argue with folklore.

A light-bodied, crisp-drinking, nicely hopped lager. A heavy-handed addition of rye malt adds a mild spiciness, which is balanced by a light, fruity, floral hop aroma.

Clear golden colour, minimal dense off-white head; aroma of pine resiny, linden honey, citrusy, some marmalade, grainy and grassy notes; taste of hoppy bitterness with similar notes to the aroma; good lager

Notes from August 2009 22 ounce growler fill from New Beer. Surprisingly weak offerings this time around. The dog days of summer. Poured into my Rare Vos tumbler. Inch of comb-over white head, that settles into a scummy broth over a filtered, dull honey amber body. Smell is sharp with spicy herbal hops, just a touch orange rind, along with some alcohol & biscuit notes backing it up. Feel is a little heavier then I expected, but not much additional flavor beyond the typical pils. Subtly sweet grain upfront, lingering bittersweet herbals right after, a little honey-ish, with a long-lasting pancake batter finish. Carbonation is alright. I could of grabbed a couple extra suspect singles, or filled this. I'm usually a pretty generous guy when it comes to talking up Shmaltz, but this one is neither clean enough nor interesting enough to revisit. A decent beer for the hour though. It's pretty ugly out there.

Basic, inoffensive, with a mild grainy sweetness and a touch of lemon and white bread. Finishes clean; the pint disappeared fast enough.
