An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses.

New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

typical golden yellow pour. A touch of spice in the aroma, with some sweet biscuit. Not Bad. Flavor is refreshing, and tasty, not discusting like other gluten free beers i’ve had. This is decent! I’m quite surprised, i dont see myself buying it again, but it did surprise me.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, best before 8/15/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear pale straw color with a 1 finger dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lemon, cracker, honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Solid aromas with balanced sorghum and earthy hop notes; with poor strength. Taste of lemon cracker, honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, cracker, honey, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Nice robustness and balance of sorghum and earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and minimal astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness, that increases through the glass. Very clean on lager flavors with minimal yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and light body; with a very smooth, crisp, moderately sticky, and slightly grainy/creamy mouthfeel that is good. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.1%. Overall this is a solid gluten free pilsener style. Good robustness and balance of sorghum and earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink. A fairly enjoyable offering.

We’re calling this the stolen-from-gluten-free-dad-because-it-is-the-only-cold-beer-at-the-cottage beer. And. It. Is. A. Mess. Light, light golden with a little white head. The taste is bitter, a little acidic, a touch of ginger, free of any of the lovely hay or cereal malty goodness that is beer. So your gluten sensitive? Take the hit and drink a beer that is twice as good as this one - say Coors Light.

355 ml bottle. (5.3% ABV) Pours a slightly hazy, pale yellow with a small white head. Sweet aroma of apple and citrus. Sweet flavour of apples and citrus with a hint of rice. Light body with a watery texture and fizzy carbonation. Reminds me of an apple cider.

Bottle at America Strikes Back, Ulfborg. Pours clear pale straw with airy white head. Clear aroma of apple juice, with notes of yeast and hops. Sweetish flavour of apples, with sourish grainy notes and rough, estery touches. Very mild aftertaste, a little sourish. Lively carbonation. PErhaps a good refresher but not my favourite beer.
