Slightly meaty aroma of dark roasted malt, candied ham, and elderberries, a little rancid. Clear cola colored, medium tan head, good retention and lacing. Elderberries on the front end. DMS asserts itself in a most unpleasant way at midpalate. Boiled carrots. Finishes with charcoal and pine. It isn’t light struck as the name suggests, but it is certainly flawed.

Location: 22 oz bottle from State Line, 3/8/13

Aroma: The nose is nice and piny with some roast, caramel, citrus, and chocolate
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a small head and some light lace
Flavor: The taste is clean and hoppy, light-mid bitterness, and some lightly sweet roasted malts
Palate: The body is medium, leaning light, average-to-soft carbonation, and a clean, dry finish
Overall Impression: Very solid Black IPA. It isn't super hoppy, but the hops are nice and clean. Good stuff for sure.

Combination of draft and 22 oz. bottle. Draft at Sunset Grill. Pint glass shows off-white, fluffy head setting on deep mahogany liquid. Some lace. Nose of roasted malt aroma with piney and herbal hops. Flavors of charred malts, caramel and black malts and extremely resinous herbal hops. Lingering pine hops that goes on and on. Medium body. My personal taste has this being off balance with too much pine resin and I didn’t get chocolate malt, more burnt notes. The bottle didn’t impress me either.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a huge foamy brown head that lingered forever and left great lacing. The aroma was roasty and toasty malts with strong floral hops, grapefruit and resin. The flavor was roasty malts, cocoa, vanilla, moderate floral and fruity hops and a touch of caramel. The finish was long with cocoa and floral hops. Moderately full bodied. Decent.

Pours a dark clear brown with garnet highlights that throws up a tall, sticky tan head. Roast malt aromas and muted hops. Roast malt and some hops in the flavor. Sort of what you might get if you blended a light stout with a medium IPA. Good body and no off flavors but this one starts up and doesn’t go any where. Still trying to figure out what this style should be.

Pours mahogany-tinged black into a shaker. Off-white head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Chocolate, resin and grapefruit aromas. Thin with dank resin, chocolate and a lasting grapefruit finish.

On tap at the Ale House in Vestal NY Pours a surprisingly clear dark brown with ruby highlights when held to light. Creamy off white head shows moderate retention. Smells of pine and cirtus with hints of chocolate and coffee. Not quite porter like in the nose but the roast is definitely there. Pine and resinous taste mixed with a hint of chocolate and roasted grains. Medium body and carbonation level with a resiuos creamy mouthfeel. I really liked this one. Great Black IPA that almost ordered another one to my table.
