Both Northern Monk and Saltaire are located amongst the industrial smoke stacks of West Yorkshire and it’s this industrial back drop that was the inspiration for this dark, rich smoked Porter. Saltaire brewed the Porter to a recipe created by the combined talents of each brewer – the rich smoked flavours result from the use of specially selected German smoked malts.

Keg beer, half pint at Craft Beer Co, Clerkenwell. Oily pour revealing a small tan-coloured head and a devil-dark coloured body. Dark malty aroma, mid-sweet, and with a little touch of smoke. Earth, almond, plums, and dark malty flavours on a backbone of subdued smokiness. Fine bodied. Soft in the mouth. A well made, tasty porter (London 28.09.2014).

Keg at CBC Clerkenwell during the Northern Monk launch tap takeover. Pours clear brown with a wimpy, tan head. Ripe fruit in the aroma with some plum, berries, mild ham. Medium sweet flavor with up-front toffee, faint chocolate, candied ham, light smoke. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sugary finish with more toffee, mild candied ham, caramel, some further berries, other ripe fruits. Very minimal smoke character here, save for the hammy aspects. Tasty but basic.

Bottle thanks to Simon at 20MR, 14/08/14. Black with a good sized tan head. Nose is roast malt, a good dose of chocolate, liqourice, dark toffee fudge, light smoke. Taste comprises smokey tones, more than on the nose, roast malt, chocolate. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, roasty drying close. Decent smoked porter.

500ml bottle. Black-brown colour with a reddish tinge, foamy beige head and aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark fruity, nutty. Taste is peaty smokey, roasted malt, sweetish, chocolate, biscuit, dark fruity, some lingering coffee & bitterness. Medium bodied, soft to medium carbonation, boozy smokey roasted finish. Quite drinkable.

Bottle @ Voldby Tasting. Pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, smoked bacon, little licorice. Flavor is quite sweet, malt, caramel, smoked meat, ham, bacon, some licorice. Thin to medium body, soft carbonation. 280514

Bottle from Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Clear, dark brown. Finest halo of tan head. Dark fruit. Light smoke. Hint of liquorice. Taste is sweet, light smokiness. Smooth palate with light carbonation. Finish is dry and light fruitiness. Not enough smoke character, but very easy drinking. Liked it.

Opaque black - brown beer. Patchy pale tan head. Smooth palate with fine minerally carbonation. Smooth mild dark malt, dry. No roast or bitterness. Very mild coffee and mellow smooth smoke. Touch of estery sweetness underneath. Smooth dry finish. It’s okay but was hoping for more from these good brewers.

Cask @ Old Gate, Hebden Bridge. Near black with an off-white creamy head. Has a nice roasted aroma and a milky smooth texture and taste.
