Our Black IPA is brewed with Pale Ale, Munich and Naked Golden Oats to achieve a toasty malt backbone with a smooth mouthfeel. The dark ominous color comes from the Chocolate Malt and the de-husked highly roasted malt which allows us to achieve the black appearance without extracting the astringency from the tannins in the malt husk! We want the layers of hops to shine against this roasty malt backdrop. In the brewhouse we used multiple additions of Warrior, Citra, Chinook, Centennial and Amarillo to extract not only bitterness but the wonderful cornucopia of aromas and flavors of fresh citrus fruit, pine, fresh cut mint and fresh flowers they offer! Fermented with our house English Ale yeast strain and then dry-hopped two separate times in the fermentation tank with Centennial, Chinook and Amarillo, this dark ale is bursting with crisp clean bitterness and layers of wonderful American hop character!

Brown, beige fluffy head. Aroma is fresh, you can feel nice blend of fruity hops and decent roast character from the malts. Tastes surprisingly light and easy drinking, roast bitterness is there, relatively sweet, but nicely balanced with hop crispness. Decent BIPA, on the light and drinkable side, not too heavy or complex.

Can. Fresh pine aroma. Looks like a terrific black beer. Rocking head. Oh so black and so bitter. Astringently dark blasting beer, straight away. Oh such a big dark rototiller. Mouth coating blackish bitter bullshit beer. Whew, now I’m gittin the diz. Cannot appreciate except for the sense numbing experience. Nasty negative Nellie.

Single can from Trader Joe’s. Just past its sell-by of Dec. 21, and it packs a fresh hop blast when I pop the can. The pour looks more brown ale than black, but once in the glass, it lets now light shine through, as it kicks up a puffy stout-colored, but more foamy, head. Taste starts out, naturally, with big hops, and they, in turn, start out with a bit citrus before turning to pine and bitterness. Malt is a little more sweet than in most hoppy beers, and is sets off the hops very nicely. Very capable beer leaving happy sticky residue on my lips. I’m liking it here more than I should under other circumstances, but I’m just happy to have found it in my stash tonight.

Can. Predicable color and head. Aromas of chocolate and pine. Flavors are a nice mix of the above. Very serviceable example of the style and no interesting comments on my part.

Bottle shared late-night during HamTech Reunion 2014. Good stuff. Moderately fruity, with lightly tangy dark berries; some roasted malts. Medium to full in body with fine to average carbonation. Sweet on the finish with more dark berries, dark bread and mild earthy bitterness. Nice.
