330ml bottle. Clear amber-brown colour with a smooth creamy white head, quite long lasting. Aroma is very malty, woodiness of the barrel and even some whisky, vanilla notes. Flavour is exactly as you’d expect, sweet, strong malt taste, caramel, hints of whisky and vanilla. Slight watery feel to it, but overall really nice.

First rate - 14/9/14 Bottle at La Flambe, Sutton Benger, Wiltshire, rb score 7/4/6/3/12. Deep amber with a moderate creamy head. It took some time to warm this to the proper temperature after freeing it from the fridge in which it had been cruelly incarcerated. Once I had, the whiskey was fairly evident in the aroma. Quite a tempting whiff actually. However, on tasting there was less evidence of whiskey. Instead some slightly muted barrel flavours came to the fore- definite vanilla and a little oak. I wasn’t convinced about the stewed plum sourness behind, and it tasted very boozy for a beer of this strength. It had the feel of being a little raw and needing a little more time in the barrel to settle it down and marry all the flavours together a bit more. In other words it’s maybe a bit half-hearted and far from being a great example of barrel-aging. Nevertheless the barrel-aging flavours that I tend to love were still there to an extent, and it was a pleasant surprise to be offered something like this in a restaurant. 2nd rate 25/12/2014 rb score 7/3/7/3/14, bottle, gift from mum & dad - cheers! Smooth Southern Comfort sweetness, better than I remember. Score shown is the average of all rates.
