White Hawk is a traditional IPA .The IPA recipe is based on the original 1880 brew that was sent to India for the British troops. The advent of India Pale Ale was born of a need to supply beer in the 1800’s to British troops in India. This hearty, heavily hopped ale was brewed to endure the rigors of the long voyage from Great Britain.

White Hawk Original IPA was launched in California in early 2002 to meet the demand for a unique India Pale Ale. Consumer response for White Hawk IPA exceeded expectations and it is fast gaining a loyal following both in 6 pack and on draft.

Bottle. If you like IPAs you might like this one. Boy, it sure is bitter. But, on a hot day of mowing grass and sweating like a pig. It sure goes down good.

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a nice large foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of citrus hops notes with light dry caramel malt notes. Taste is also a mix between some citrus hops notes with some dry caramel malt notes with medium bitterness. Body is average with good carbonation. Average old school IPA.

It pours as light gold with a finger’s worth of foam. Nice lacing ensues.

The nose has good balance to it. Flowery hop mild bitters mixed with caramel malt.

The bitterness from the hops is sharp but tempered by malt. It’s actually more bitter, flowery-herbal, than I expected from the smell. There’s grapefruit hitting my palate but it’s sharing duties with herbal and flower like bitterness.

The malt comes across as lightly sweet with some biscuit.

Good mouthfeel, good drinkability. Good IPA. --- Beer merged from original tick of White Hawk (I.P.A.) on 18 May 2015 at 16:29 - Score: 7

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy dark orange/copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, biscuit, light toffee, herbal, floral, grass, and floral/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity citrus/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, pine, caramel, biscuit, light toffee, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange zest, pine, caramel, biscuit, light toffee, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very solid IPA. Good complexity and robustness of citrus/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle in our appartment, Maui, from the Wine Corner in Paia, 25/04/14. Clear golden amber with a good sized off white head that retains well. Nose is citric sherbets, light floral hop tones, straw, faint caramel, bitter orange, damp towel. Taste comprises light citric peel, bitter orange, straw, orange squash, bitter resonance. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. A rather muted low end IPA, looked the part but offered little at the business end.

355 ml bottle. Slightly unclear deep golden body with a medium sized off-white head. Nice aroma of citric fruit and caramel malt. Flavor is sweet, caramel malt, biscuit, citric fruit and decent bitterness. Medium body and bitter aftertaste. A well-made, straight forward old school American IPA with malt balance. Nothing special but nothing wrong either. A decent thirst quencher.
