Using a recipe from 1884 found in the archives of the original brewery in Ilkley, this distinctive Victorian Pale Ale was designed as the perfect accompaniment to food, being light and crisp. We have added our modern slant using all kiwi hops and the result is a beer for any occasion. Ideal for restaurants as an alternative to lager.

Hops: Riwaka, Motueka, Southern Cross & Nelson Sauvin.

Cask at CBC Clerkenwell, London. Pours clear yellow with a whispy, white foam head. Aroma is mostly baked straw. Light sweet flavor with more straw, some biscuits, other pale malts. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Pretty bitter on the finish, some plastic and lemon, bitter hay, pale malts. Strong start, but the bitterness in the finish, which is of dubious compsition, leaves a bit to be desired.

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green - 30/09/12. Clear pale blonde. Pale malts on the nose, muted hops, not a lot doing on the nose of this one. Citrus fruit in the taste, light malt and hop flavours. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a bitter finish. Decent enough drop but no show stopper.

Cask at the Craft. Clear pale gold beer. Tidy white head. Light light palate which is also a little dry. Light floralness. Tiny bit of soap. A weak shadow of citrus hop. Light dry finish. Mild citric aftertaste. Okay - if something of a fresh air beer.2.8

Bottle. Palate is light, dry and crisp. Nice light hops - mellow lime and a trace of lemon. Fairly dry finish. Mild bitter linger. All right.

Cask at Craft Beer Co, London on 15th September 2012. Gold with white foam. Virtually no lacing. Plenty of hops in aroma. Grassy hop in-mouth, and some fine grapefruit. These two notes linger in the finish, on a light but engaging mouthfeel. More body than expected for the given strength.

Cask, handpump, Craft, Clerkenwell, Saturday 15th September 2012 Have to confess to drinking this beer and sort of totally forgetting that I had it, such was the lack of notes. However to be fair this beer was never going to be an impact beer at 3.3% and it wasn’t, though it was a fine pale ale and I guess a good recreation of an old style, though there I believe that they used Australian and American hops. In short crisp, refreshing beer with a little dryness as I recall but a tad thin. A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov11 3.0
