A big, rich English style Barleywine that, as its name suggests, has tints of ruby around the edges of its brown body, with a toffee, caramel, toasted pecan sweetness that is kept in balance with a smooth, alcohol warmth, and slightly fruity American hop note. This will be perfect around the fire, with a cigar, with a rich meal, or just while cozying up and relaxing with family and friends this season. It may be enjoyed right away, or allowed to age in the bottle. Vertical tastings are encouraged.

Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2013, 10/08/13. Dark chestnut/mahogony brown with a thin light tan covering. Nose is light fart, toffee, sugars, whiff of smoke, woody notes. Taste comprises grain, sugars, medicinal notes, TCP, toffee, light smoke, dark fruits. Medium bodied for 10%, moderate carbonation, dry finish. Not unpleasant but not a barley wine I’d bother revisiting, lacks depth for the ABV.

ChrisO’s Pre GBBF ’Are You Scottish?’ tasting. Dark amber - brown beer. Good pale tan head. Light palate, dry and a little soft. Sweet malty chocolate. Tastes like Maltesers! Light smooth finish, with some dark chocolate coming through. Nice beer!

Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2013. It pours cloudy mahogany brown with a small light tan head. The nose is toasty, toffee, wood, spice, light smoke, brown bread and varnish. The taste is caramel, toffee, raisin, sultana, wood, light charred wood, earth, decent bitterness, cocoa and light alcohol warmth. Full body and moderate carbonation. A touch sweet, but well put together. Nice.

Bottle at Chris O’s pre-GBBF shindig, 2013. Reddish-brown pour with a beige head. Coconut, chocolate and caramel aroma. Quite an earthy taste. Bit of caramel and seemingly cucumber(??) in there. I like this.

Bottle courtesy of Ed, thank you sir! Hazy brownish maroon, tan edge head. Aroma of Christmas spice anx brown bread. Taste is nicely spiced toasted pumpernickel. Far more creative than your average barleywine. --- Beer merged from original tick of Perennial Vermilion on 26 Aug 2014 at 07:48 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 6. Original review text: Draft at Scion. Cloudy maroon amber color, tan edge head. Aroma of boozy burnt butterscotch. Taste is similar.

Bottle. Pours a hazy deep brown with a brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has notes of green apple and toffee with a hint of backing roast and nuttiness. Flavor is similar with some green apple and toffee with the finish having notes of toast, roast and nuttiness.

12 oz goblet / tulip draft at Martin City Brewing Company in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a murky dark brown, with a limited dark khaki head. The aroma is warming toffee, dark fruit, caramel malt sweetness and a warming hint of alcohol in the back. Nice nose. The taste is real big on the toffee and caramel, quite full flavor, transitioning to the plum fruit in the back. Alcohol is present, though primarily in the long malty finish. The palate is heavy to medium bodied, low carbonation level, and the lingering sweet warming booze finish. Nice Barley Wine, I have enjoyed these Perennial beers so far.

Pour is a dark red with a small head. Aroma is sweet molasses malt with some toffee and alcohol. Flavor is a nice caramel malt with some earthyness and a big dose of alcohol. Very sweet and malt forward and a way big alcohol presence. This is a beer to lay down for a year or two. Right now it is a huge malt bomb with a lot of alcohol.
