Teaming up with Terrapin Brewing Co. for the second time, Shmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’12. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in the venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle to Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).
This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and cinnamon. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle cinnamon aroma. Complex malt overtones quickly give way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss.

So I added this and until apostrophes are fixed it'll look odd. Not sure how my brother in law dug up this old bottle but for my birthday I was given these vintage Hebrew beers. fine brown pour. nose is little vanilla, chocolate, and booze. Tastes the same cocoa powder, vanilla, hooch, earth, chalk, cinnamon. nice and smooth from aging. pretty tasty.

Bottle shared late night in the hotel lobby during RBWG 2015. Pours Clear brown with a frothy beige head. Lots of toasty grains, dusty cinnamon, toffee. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes with lots of chalky cinnamon, earthy hops, toasty grains, mild alcohol. So so.

Bottle @ home via rotbox. Pours a deep brown appearance with a thin brown head. Aroma is bursting with chocolate, caramel, light smoke, vanilla, and candy bar. There’s some ginger and cinnamon in the aroma as well. Medium bodied. A ton of vanilla, toasty burnt bread, chocolate, and toffee in the flavor. Moderately sweet. Booze held in check. Not a horrible beer but there’s just too much going on and they added just too much junk.

bottle on 4/30/14 - Pours dark brown with a small tan head. It smells of cocoa, cinnamon, and plenty of malt. The taste is very sweet with chocolate and spice. The 8% abv is not noticeable. Very good.

22 oz. bottle purchased at Julio’s Liquors. Dark brown color with lasting head. Nose is as advertised, chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla. Flavor is mostly the same with Large amounts of vanilla in the finish. I don’t say this often but It is too sweet, on the border of cloying. No... It is cloying, way too touch vanilla. Body is medium with a lingering vanilla bean in the finish.

Opaque black - brown beer. Good head but an odd muted off tan colour. Dry palate, a little crisp. Mild minerals. Bitterish chocolate and a trace of coffee. Sweetish vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon. The dominant taste here is bitterish chocolate. Finishes fresh and semi dry. Nice list of ingredients on this beer but overall they not brought together in a cohesive whole. Getting to be hard work.

Bottle 22fl.oz.Clear dark brown colour with a large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, dark chocolate, sweet vanilla. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, vanilla, chocolate, peppery. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130223]

On tap at the bocktown. Dark pour with a tan head. Barely any aroma but there is a tad of this mild beery thing hitting my olfactory. First taste is stronger but has lots of chocolate or malt in there. Chocolately feel fer sure. This stuff was way too expensive for what it is. Finish is lots like choco flavored medicine. wew. Not impressed.
