Bottle, Cloisters. Med brown, thin head. The choc and roast malts are assertive, drowning out the kiwi hops (pacific jade and Wakatu?). You get the same effect on the palate, a nice beer but aside from a little woodiness ( not a nz signature) it doesn’t show much hop. A nice burnt porter though.

500ml bottle from Appellation Wines, Comely Bank branch. Pours deep dark brown with a good off-white head. Big roasted aromas, lots of chocolate mixed in with the hops, a bit too much for me, more like a hoppy porter or stout. Taste continues this theme, toasty and citrus. Full-bodied, creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very enjoyable.

500ml bottle from Nina’s Mini Market. Pours a bubbly, light brown head with fine duration and good lacework to the glass. Dark as pitch. Dark malty nose with smell of cocoa breaking through. Roasted, almost burnt, malty taste, dark chocolate, pine needles, ash and some dark spices. Fresh malt bitter ending. Medium bodied. Pretty nice (hotel room, Edinburgh 08.08.2013).

Bottle shared at the ChrisO Flags of Many Nations Easter Tasting 2013 - London. Pours dark brown with a creamy, off-white head. Burnt chocolate aroma, some roasted malts. Light to medium sweet flavor with hefty charred malt character, a bit of bitter baking cocoa. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sturdy bitter char and earth to finish, with more bittersweet baking cocoa. Decent, but any juiciness to the hops is overtaken by the potent roasted malt character.

Bottle from BeerHive, Edinburgh [230513]
Black with dark ruby edges, big frothy tan head. some lacing
Aroma of roasted malts, touch of coffee grounds, dark malts, dab of piney hop
Taste of roasted malts. dab of dark bitter chocolate, some burnt toast, touch of coffee grounds, some smooth dark rich malts in there, dab of piney citrus hops, not as fruity as expected, very stouty for a Black IPA
Palate - Medium carb, bit overcarbonated...after a good swirl...smooth quite oily sweet dark malts and bitter roast. Finish as main flavour with lingering burnt roast, some coffee grounds, rather dry, some bitter zesty hop hidden in there amongst the bitter roast, getting some floral hop coming through
Overall - Very porter/ dryish stout-like Black IPA, the hops are in the background to the malts. I did try the cask and I think it was more hoppy than this - a good swirl to get rid of excess carbonation improved the flavour and mouthfeel considerably. A decent very stouty roasted BIPA but I personally prefer them more fruity.

Tasting at ChrisOs. Almost clear dark brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Palate is light and a little crisp. Good dark malt - thin but with rich chocolate. Touch of roast bitterness. Mild tangy hops with mellow tropical fruits, lime readily identifiable. A little floral character. Semi dry finish. All right.

Bottle at Chriso Easter "Flags of many nations" Tasting, 31/03/13 thanks to Craig. Dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that clears edgeward. Nose is hops, light chocolate, dark malt, biscuit, light tropical fruits, hint of smoke. Taste comprises chocolate, touch of grapefruit, dark toffee, hops. Medium bodied with fine carbonation, dry in the finish with some bitterness. Overall - drinkable stuff but came over a little porter like meets black IPA hybrid.
