Mary Wiles joined our brewery team after spending 30 years brewing and doing quality control for a Very, Very Big Brewer. Mary evolved into a craft beer brewer, and now she’s doing our quality control, having fun while helping us make sure that Brooklyn beers are tasting great and ready to make you happy. But Mary has a bright thing lurking in her past, present and future – Mary has maple trees. A lot of maple trees. Actually, a ridiculous number of maple trees, acres of them, right northwest of us in upstate New York. And her family farm makes 100% real New York State maple syrup.
Real maple syrup tastes great on pancakes and waffles, but it’s awfully good in beer too. Porter is a classic British ale style that traveled to the United States, sustained George Washington during the Revolution, and later built London’s great breweries. Mary’s Maple Porter is a rich, dark ale featuring a large portion of her maple syrup in the kettle. After fermentation by our house ale yeast, the syrup is no longer sweet (yeast likes to eat maple syrup too), but the maple flavor shows through in a complex interplay with caramel, chocolate, and cof fee flavors from our blend of roasted malts. An earthy hop note rounds it all out.

Draught @ Akkurat. Lovely porter that starts out with some chocolate sweetness and ends with notes of coffee and dark syrup. Long and nice aftertaste. Big bodied. Easy to drink.

Draught at Akkurat. Pours redish brown, bit oily with a tan head. A nice base porter with a twist. High cacao chcolate, rosted malt and sirup sweetness like in a rye bread.

Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm. Near black, faint beige head. Aroma of maple syrup, coffee and tin. Sweet with medium-full doy and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Caramel and molasses, slightly sticky with some warmth. Low bitterness in a finish where coffee lingers.

On tap. Pours with a near black hued body with a fading tan head. Aromas are of maple, wood, vanilla, light banana esters almost, a few other delicate esters, chocolate (milk chocolate), and a light earthy note. Flavors are of vanilla, leather, cocoa, smoke, chocolate, earthy, molasses, maple residue, mild banana esters, caramelized bananas foster. Creamy mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is dominated by maple, slight smoked malt and considerable sweetness, though not overbearing. Flavour definitely brings out rich maple upfront, but without a lopsided, cloying sweetness as I was expecting. Smooth, light-body with a big maple finish. Very enjoyable.

On tap at Flying Saucer. Pours a dark brown with medium tan head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is raisin malt and syrup. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet brown sugar malt with long sweet finish. Easy to drink a good Portet from Brooklyn.

A deep dark porter with a thin creamy brown head. In aroma, a sweet chocolate maple with light licorice notes, mocha coffee, very nice. In mouth, a nice smooth sweet chocolate, coffee oils, woody maple, very nice. On tap at Three Penny Taproom, March 12 2012.

Sampled on draft at the Headkeeper this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy dark tan head that left decent lacing. The aroma was cola, toasty malts and a bit of vanilla. The flavor was cola, toasty malts, cocoa and hints of maple, cherry and molasses. The finish was medium length toasty malts, maple, molasses and cola. Medium body. Ok.

On tap with a big nice blackish pour. Clean fresh olfactory. At first there was some alky in there but as the session continues it becomes a little sweeter than I care for. Not one of the more pleasant maple beers I’ve had which contain maple but better than the average maple beer thing.

Aroma: This one has a sweet and roasted aroma, definite maple, dark malts, and vanilla
Appearance: It pours into the glass a dark brown color with a light brown head and no lace
Flavor: Tastes similar to the nose, with a fairly sweet flavor which is balanced by roasted malts
Palate: The body is medium, it has a smooth and creamy feel to it, and a decent, sweetish finish
Overall Impression: I enjoyed this one, it was another nice offering from Brooklyn. It was a tasty Porter, a little on the sweet side, but tasty. The maple worked well in this one.
