Cask at Grape & Grain. It pours near black a small light tan head. The nose is rich roasted, pepper, light smoke, salted liquorice, rubber and scorched earth. The taste is roasty, toast, coffee, good deal bitterness, liquorice, ash, pepper and dark chocolate with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Flavoursome, robust and rather drinkable. One of By The Horn’s best.

Poured from cask, 1/3 pint at GBBF 2013, day one. Dotted spots to the glass from a filmy layer. Very dark coloured body. Roasted dark malty nose. Nuts, coffee and black berries to the taste buds. Mild bittersweet ending. Smooth and fine bodied. Tasty (London Olympia 13.08.2013).

Bottle from ’Jacks’ Goring-on-Thames, Oxon, consumed at home, Sunday 8th September 2013 Pours black the head is very slight but showing a beige colour. Lovely coffee and milk chocolate combination on the nose. Mightily impressed with this beer, loads of chocolate and coffee (unsurprisingly) showing again. Feels quite substantial in mouth, it is roasty a little ashy and with some bitterness, this is a samn good porter. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 4.0

33 cl bottle @ Majaranta, BBE 03/2014
Aroma has english toffee, licorice and some ash. Flavour has salty licorice, herbs, tobacco, ash and some coffee. Pairs ok with BBQ steak. The licorice is nice here but the saltiness and herbal notes are too overwhelmng.

330ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with small, creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Chocolately dark malty aroma, hints of cocoa and nougat. Taste is initially minimally sweet dark malty, hints of dark fruit, later with notes of coffee, chocolate, cautious floral hoppy overtones, eventually dry and roasty in the finish. Very good.
