First developed for Bonfire Night 2011, this stout has a warming chilli afterglow. It aims to have just enough chilli to produce a pleasant aftertaste, without having so much that it will have you dashing for some water to put the fire out on your tongue!

Cask at PoW, Farnborough. Spiced chocolate aroma. Dark and glossy - a cola tint. No head. Light bitter into low key creaminess. Coffee. The chili only gives a hint of its presence at first. Then come throughi to the finish alongside charcoal. Medium bodied. Creamy. Flat carbonation. Long astringent finish. Perhaps it's unsurpsing that an oldschool brewery would produce such a restrained chili stout. However that's not necessarily a bad thing. Warming and adds character to what I seem to remember was a not overly exciting base Stout

23/2/2019. Cask at the Great British Winter Beer Festival 2019, Norwich. Pours almost black with a bubbly off-white to beige head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. Moderate sweetness, light bitterness. Medium body, slight oily texture, soft carbonation. Finish develops a still burn, the chilli's not at all apparent from the aroma though.

Cask at the Lyndhurst, Reading. They haven’t have they? No, surely no-one in their right minds would take the lovely smooth decadent Doodle Stout that I like so much and put chillies in it? That’d be crazy. Oh, right, that’s exactly what they have done. Fortunately much of the character of the original beer remains. It’s dark brown with a thick cream head, and at first it’s all smoothness and chocolate and roasted malt and coffee. The chilli starts as a vaguely irritating tingle at the back of the throat but as you drink more the heat grows quite a lot. Unlike some chilli beers it never overwhelms the other flavours but- here’s the thing- it in no way works with them or complements them. There’s a good stout there and there’s chilli there, they’ve not mixed well and frankly should have been kept separate. Nevertheless, the base beer is good enough that it’s still quite enjoyable- just not as good as the original.

Cask at dark brown with a tiny white head. The nose is earthy, cheap hotdog, smoky, bbq sauce, spicy and some sweetness. The taste is mellow roast, earth, light spice, treacle, meat, light bitterness with a dry, spicy finish. Medium body, soft carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Not as bad as you might think. Fine.
