Alesmith’s Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. The brewers at Alesmith had such a great time concocting Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event.
Alesmith 2008 is a traditional English-style Barleywine. Only the finest floor-malted barley and English hops were selected, in addition to a true top-cropping English yeast. Intensely malty and overflowing with flavors of caramel and toffee. Decadence 2008 showcases the very best of this classic English style.

My rating #2900, at least at this point! 750 ml bottle from msante79! Thanks!!! Nose of toffee, prunes, and a little sherry note. Murky brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is very pruney with a lot of red wine and a hint of tartness. Not my favorite Decadence by far, guess I should pull out that last 2006 bottle and revisit it!

Bottle opened on the bus ride from Orlando to Tampa Bay Brewing Co. Pours cloudy light brown with tan head. Caramel malt aroma with some sourness. Sweet caramel flavor with some sourness. Definately infected but still pretty good. Medium body with average carbonation. Thanks to whoever opened this.

Bottle shared with gorditoabd. Pours a striking ruby brown with a frothy head that leaves lots of lacing on the side of the glass. Nose is an interesting mix of grassy, spicy hops over a caramel and brown sugar maltiness and a little bit of a dark fruit presence (cherries?). Flavor is decidedly sour... kind of like tart cherries in brown sugar. Mouthfeel is pretty thin but slippery. There’s been a lot of talk about this and I’d agree that the sourness makes this taste like an infected beer more than anything else. It isn’t horrid, but I’d take it without the sour kick at the finish.

750 mL bottle courtesy of TheCheeseMan. Thanks! Pours a hazy bronze color with a hint of orange. Medium frothy offwhite head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee, green apple, berries, bread, cinnamon, earthy, leafy hops. Taste is toffee, brown sugar, lots of fruity notes including berries, cherries, candied citrus. Very much like fruitcake. Very subtle hops in the finish. Medium-full bodied.

Bottle from South Bay Drug. Quite ruby in front of halogen - otherwise just dark. Nice two-finger tan head; fine bubbles. Aroma of sweet mild dark fruit; sort of cherry. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Lots of malt, light touch of sour, and significant fruit. There’s something more than caramel, but it’s definitely not treacle. A bit of heat. Finishes quite a bit cherry. The sour might reflect the type of cherry. Seems to have a bit of chocolate in the aftermath. There’s a heck of a lot going on in this beer. Keeps changing.

re-rate December 22nd, 2010. Thanks Gary. Trying this one again with some age really made this beer stand out. Nice notes of vinous and fruits; figs, malty with caramel, blend of yeast and light bitter hops. Overall the beer keeps a mild tartness albeit keeping all the aspects of a barleywine. courtesy of Solan. Not sure where this barley is going. Pours dark golden, beige head. Aroma is malty, sugary with bad notes of vinegar. Flavor, malty with some nasty sourness that seemed borderline infected. Some caramel, brown sugar, some dark fruits, boozy and yeasty finish. Not great and least favorite of the whole Decadence serie.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of DrBill. Pours a hazy reddish amber with a small off-white head. Tart, fruity nose with some alcohol present. Medium body, caramel and sweet overripe fruit - sweet/tart fruitiness. The finish has warming alcohol with some tartness. Quite complex and enjoyable. 070709

Bottle. Ruby beer with a nice dark cream colored head. Rich malt, and cherry aroma with a bit of toffee. Caramel, cherry, earthy flavor with alcohol. Medium-plus bodied. Alcohol and cherries linger with a bit of a tart twang, toffee, and earth. Interesting. Big fruitiness, hops, and the twang don’t seem to all come together.
