Brewed to an old monastic recipe by Little Valley Brewery in Hebden Bridge, this dark, Trappist-style beer is full-bodied with a taste of rich fruit and malt. Bottle conditioned to ‘dubbel’ strength.

Working closely with Wim van der Spek, head brewer at Little Valley Brewery in Hebden bridge, the monks of Ampleforth have once again begun to sell ‘La Biere Anglaise’. Following extensive research, Wim has paired modern brewing techniques with the fragments of information available to produce Ampleforth Abbey Dubbel – a beer as rich in history as it is in flavour.

Bottle shared with Niller - fuzzy amber pour with off-white head. Aroma and taste is medium sweet malty, with some caramel, light toffee, dried fuits, light spice. Nice.

Bottle from Bier Huis, Ossett. Clear, dark copper colour. Thin, pale tan head. Dried fruit. Red cherry. Banana. Light toffee. Taste is faiy sweet, but has enough dryness, too, to balance it out. Carbonation is just right, and accentuates that dryness. Didn’t expect to like this, to be honest. Decent.

Taste is caramel, cherry, chocolate, raisins, nutty, sourish, tangy light bitter. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry nutty bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BBE Jul 15, at Hilpeä Hauki, 20131109) The beer poured dark brown and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, sweetness and dark chocolate. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, caramel, hops, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty, sweet and bitter. A confusing attempt to brew a dubbel
