Edwin Beard Budding of Thrupp, Stroud, invented the lawnmower in 1830 - 'for the purpose of cropping or shearing the vegetable surface of lawns, grass plats, and pleasure grounds'.

Budding was an engineer servicing the abundant wool mills of the Stroud valleys and he took his inspiration from a machine with a helical blade that cut the nap (fluff) off the newly woven cloth. Budding went into partnership with, John Ferrabee to produce the mowers at Phoenix Mill Foundries in Thrupp. An example of Buddings original lawnmower can be seen at the Stroud 'Museum in the Park'.

50cl bottle from Budgens, Belsize Park. A rather cloudy amber pour with a tight cream head; floral aroma; soft and grainy in the mouth, with some citrus fruit and some fruity malts; and a pleasingly crisp bitterness to finish. A pleasant golden ale.

Taste comprises light floral notes, touch of caramel, fruity overtures. Medium bodied, soft carbonation - good conditioning on this number, semi dry grassy bitterness at the curtain call. 500ml Bottle: BBD of Sep 2013, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home during July 2013. Misty old gold body with a weak and thin white covering. Fruity and floral aroma with some grain notes as the beer warmed a little, a trace of sweetness arrived late on too. The taste was also fruity, but with a pleasant bitter finish. There was a yeast feel to the flavours throughout, along with a mild malt presence that all blended together to make an interestingly flavoured brew. Nicely carbonated and an all round fine beer.

Aroma: Weak floral aroma.

Appearance: Clear amber body with a tiny white head that soon fades to nothing. Very light carbonation. No lacing.

Taste: Simple grain, citrus and earthy flavours. Mild bitterness.

Palate: Thin to medium body with a slightly oily mouthfeel. Nice carbonation fizz.

Overall: Quite bland but perfectly drinkable. I wouldn’t buy this again - it’s just ok.
