Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Doodler. Pours a clear dark orangey brown with a smallish beige head. Some overripe fruit in the nose - and cocoa powder. Medium body, dry roast and chocolate with a little dried overripe fruit. Ends dry. Nothing wrong with it, but perhaps a little plain. 190412

Bottle. Pours black. Tan head. Nose of roast black malt, cocoa powder and lactose. Taste is cheap baker’s chocolate, burnt black malt and powdered lactose. Light body.

12oz bottle. Pours clear dark brown. Head was huge after poor and died down to a nice thin layer, that laced my pint as I drank.. Smells of coffee and malt. Tastes of mocha, and coffee. Body is thin and crisp, like a lager, and very refreshing. High drinkabilty. Not as filling and as a regular stout. A good option if you don’t want a heavy stout. Well done.

A deep dark stout with a thin moka head. In aroma, light beany chocolate, grassy notes. In mouth, a powdery lightly sweet stout with light veggie notes, a bit of metallic notes. So-so. On tap at ROC Empire Brewfest, Feb. 19 2011.

Deep dark brown body, but ruby tinted when held up to a light, with a rich, strong tan head. Aroma of rubbing alcohol, pure and simple. Nothing pleasant, and if anything - horribly scary. Light-bodied; Strong pungent flavour of - you guessed it, rubbing alcohol. Some light roasted malt and caramel come through, but just about nothing pleasing. Aftertaste strong and thin-bodied with the rubbing alcohol, malt and water coming through. Overall, a pretty bad experiment and definitely nothing worth sampling, but that should have been clear on the ’Saranac’ label. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Bon Vivant Market in Smithfield, Virginia for US$1.85 on 14-October-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 23-October-2010.

Bottle. Clear brown with a small tan head. Aroma was vinegar and something fruity. I didn’t get much from the flavor other than a light malt finish. I’m wondering if I got a poor bottle because this did not seem like a stout at all.

Weak raisin and dark malt nose with chlorine overtones. Black, thin tan head. Thin mouthfeel. Charcoal flavor, watery, lacking character. Bad for style.

Saranac, would you say they were one of the first readily available craft beers in the usa? Everytime you turn aroiune and think there cannot be another saranac I haven’t tasted, well there it is. Some of them quite good, too. Like this little gem. Has a nice presentation in the glass like a nitro but its not flat on the palate. Mild CO2 makesw this interesting on the first taste. Pleasant dry stout aroma, you know, the mild burned wood er sumthin. Taste is well behaved and what else but nicely stout like. I do taste some mild sour or tartnesss in the background which gives it a tad of wildness in the personality. Finish is just plain be good an that. No gunk on the bottom of this bottle.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a deep dark brown color appearing black in the glass. Medium brown head with good head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, coffee, chocolate and a faint smokiness. Taste is bitter hops, bitter roasted malts with a bit of leather, chocolate and smoke in the finish. Medium bodied. Decent beer.
