This is a tasty Winter Ale to snuggle up to, released for the winter months when snow blankets the terrain of the mind and the body craves warmth and, let’s be honest, it’s dark and wet most of the time so your beer better be damn good. Winter Ale is dark like the weather with roast chocolate and warm malt flavors balanced by noble hop aroma and subtle hoppy spice. Warm up to it. Because Beer Matters!

On tap at PreFunk Nampa. Deep very dark brown. Thin traces of tan lacing. Lots of sharp fresh dark roast. A little licorice and well bittered. This is more like a robust porter I think. Quite dark and roasty. Delicious though. A touch of burnt sugar at the end.

Can. Pours unclear mahogany, medium creamy beige head, good lacing. Aroma is a bit smoky, roasty, rich, coffee, malty. Flavor is light sweet, light plus bitter, hints of dark roast and smoke, Noble hops, nutty. Fullish body, soft mouthfeel. Interesting.

Pours a rich chocolate brown from a can, chocolate aroma and chocolate milk flavor, or more like a weak cocoa. Noble hop flavor is kind of a nice backdrop to everything. Good beer.

Can from Boise Co-op. Dark pour, near black, small ring of brown head. Aroma is roast grains and chocolate. Taste is very rich, smooth bitterness. Chocolate, latte, burnt toast. Just shy of a porter. Really tasty.

12 oz can. Pours a dark brown colour with full head. Aromas of brown sugar and sweet toasted malts. Flavours of flat cola, burnt sugar, toasted malts and dry Xmas spice. Just doesn’t come together for me.

It’s fun when you are trying to rate a brewery more, and then you scroll through all the rare beers you’ve had from them, and find one of the easiest beers to get, and somehow, it hasn’t been rated. Though i honestly haven’t tried this once since the name changed so it feels like s brand new beer anyway. Its also fun to try the base beer of so many crazy good beers, amd look back at the experiences. Beer really does matter, and for that, i say cheers to these guys. Draft pour at Hop and Hound, Bothell. Chocolate, dark brown pour with a ton of foam head and lacing. A constant roasted character here, that’s intriguing and interesting. Some chocolate, a.little nutty. Pleasant. Cool, and warming at the same time. An ideal winter beer here. Very well done.
