Black Maria is an American inspired Black IPA. It is black as an stout and hoppy as an IPA. The beer has been brewed with a good amount of highly roasted Carafa Malts, but with a relatively low amount of caramel and chocolate malts. This way we get the burned bitter and delicate chocolate notes in the beers, that goes well with the bitter and fruity aromas of the hops. The lack of caramel and chocolate results in less residual sweetness that you normally pick up from an Stout. For the hops we wanted some hops that could stand up against the Carafa malts. Therefore we used a mix of Columbus, Centennial, Galaxy and Cascade for the hop profile.

Another great dark and hoppy IPA from TO OL. Nose is of grapefruit hops, licorice and roasted malt. The taste profile is complex and complementary - bitter chocolate, roasted malt, licorice, earthy and fruity bitterness, brown sugar and cherries are featured. The body is thick for a black IPA . The aftertaste is even and balanced. Very well crafted.

Bottle at home. Aroma is fruity hops, tropical fruits, pine resin, citrus, dark roasted malt, hint of dark chocolate. Flavour is nicely roasty hoppy bitter. Body is medium. Quite nice, lots of fruity piney hops with a roast malt backbone.

Bottle. Pitch black, large and lasting beige coloured head, creamy. Milder fruity and piney nose, resin and perhaps some hints of caramel. Quite bitter start, lots of pine and herbal presence - very sharp. Bittery aftertaste, that fades away quite fast, dry feeling. Lighter body. A bit too sharp and piney for my liking.

BB 04/04/2021, Vintage bottle, 330ml, brewed at De Proef;
APPEARANCE: deep, dark brown and blackish color, compact, mousse like brownish head, quite lasting, great lacing
AROMA: despite age, very inviting aroma of toasted bread, bread crust, impressions of jam or marmalade, candied orange and citrus zest, dried mango pieces, prunes, sweet resin, hints of thyme and garlic underneath, old chocolate cubes, light bready sweetness, soft citrus presence on the edges, mild spicy note, hints of alcohol, earth dust and spruce tips
TASTE: smooth creamy and fluffy carbonation, medium body (less bold than Black Malts & Body Salts), very drinkable for 8.1% abv; light sweet onset of toasted malts, bread crust and mild brown sugar; dried mango and impressions of candied orange; firm hop bitterness of grapefruit peel, notes of chicory and wormwood, hints of bitter chocolate here and there, sweet resin, light roast bitterness in form of overbaked bread crust, subtle ash; mineral presence and subtle umami vibe
OVERALL: Black IPA is probably one of my favorite beer styles; solid execution at De Proef, smooth, harmonious and no sign of alcohol at the palate; no flaws neither oxidation for around two years old bottle;

Bottle, 0.33l. Aroma of cocoa, chocolate, roasted malt, stone fruit, mild tropical fruit and alcohol. Pours pitch black color with large soapy light brown head, great lacing and sparkling appearance. Taste starts with medium sweet roasted malt and dark chocolate, following is fruity, herbal and piney, mouthfeel is smooth, while finish is heavy bitter. Medium body, creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Holy Mary...

0,33 l bottle. Pours dark brown with big, frothy, dense, lasting tan head that leaves plenty lacing. Plenty of toasted malt notes, light smoky, with citrus and pine hop aroma. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter. Body is surprisingly light for ABV, mouthfeel is quite oily, carbonation mild. Finish is quite long, toasty and smoky and roasted bitterness.

Bottle. Almost black. After eight mint, sweet and sour. Sweeties in the intense aroma. Roasty Malty sweet flavor with licorice. Bretty notes, grassy hops and an upcoming pleasant sourness. Suboptimal balance but a Nice beer.
