Cask gravity at Firkin Alehouse Folkestone. Black beer thin tan head. Vanilla chocolate aroma. Dry stout. Good. Good balance. Lovely chocolate sweet vanilla ok but not the best beer in Britain.

Bottle at home. Bought at Inn At Home, Guildford. Sweet coffee/malt aroma, with a hint of vanilla. Cola coloured. Very sparse beige head. Sweet at first, then bitter, especially in finish. Relatively light bodied for a stout. Carbonation is front and centre in terms of mouthfeel - the jury is out on this element. There is some vanilla there but as per the aroma am getting sour coffee and berries. Prefer it to their coffee stout. But itโ€™s confusing me - sweet and sharp/bitter.

Pours a deep dark brown with a foamy light tan head. Roasted malt and chocolate aroma with hints of vanilla. Smooth roasted chocolaty and sweet flavour, a little vanilla and a very light bitterness in the finish.

Cask at the Hope and Champion, Beaconsfield. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off white head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, vanilla, roasty malt. The flavour is moderate sweet with a dry roasty coffee sweet malt palate. Full bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask @ The Three Fishes, Shrewsbury. Pours dark, small tan head. Aroma is lightly sweet, chocolate, faint roast. Taste is smooth, very light milk chocolate, very soft dark malts. No real discernible vanilla in the taste, although there is a subtle sweetness. Decent pintworthy stout, but nothing outstanding.

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Black with a thin beige head. Light fizz. Vanilla is obvious in the whiff, and I was afeared this may be unbearably sweet. But no- itโ€™s well balanced by the roasty malts and heavy coffee notes of the underlying stout. Incredibly smooth and silky. I love Binghams Doodle Stout and this is a great variant of it (unlike the hot dog version). Like a vanilla latte mixed with the flavour of a creme caramel dessert, but with the sweetness checked just enough by a sprinkling of dark roasted coffee beans and a hint of wood. Nice. Really nice. Possibly even be better than the original version. A superb stout.
