A beer that dates back to the eighteenth century, when it was created by brewers in Burton-on-Trent (UK). And its Victorian origins are apparent from the very first encounter. Let yourself be seduced first by the beer’s colour and elegance, then by the fruity aroma of the finest top-fermenting yeasts. Full-bodied yet delicate, it expresses its well-rounded richness in a dance of flavour.

Bottle at La Tartana, Boccadasse, Genoa. Pours bright golden/amber with a small white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, fruity, slightly nutty. Heavy sweetness but after the initial feeling it was too sweet, it grew on me. Light bitterness. Medium body, sticky texture. Finish is sticky and sweet. Not my favourite beer on this trip, but it was pretty good nevertheless.

Pours a clear orange-golden color, topped wit ha decent a bit off-white head. Malty aroma, caramel notes, with grassy aroma. Taste starts with some mild sweetness, caramel notes, grassy body with medium hoppy bitterness. Nice, non-offensive, drinkable.

Bottle, 0.33l. Clear deep golden color with thin creamy off-white head, fair lacing and average sparkling appearance. Aroma of mild caramel, fruits, grassy hops and honey. Taste starts moderate sweet malty, follows by fruity acidity with sweet honey note and moderate bitter finish. Medium body, slick texture and average carbonation in palate. Not bad at all...

330ml bottle from Gustos restaurant Heswall. Clear dark golden colour with a white head. Malty aroma with slight grassy hops. Taste starts apricot and marmalade with bitter finish. Not as hoppy as an American style pale ale. Nice and subtle.

Bottle. Aroma caramel, nuts, chocolate, rather minor hops. Taste almost medium bitter, light to meidum sweet. Initial impression is even more sweet than bitter. Golden to orange colour, medium offwhite head, very quickly disappearing. A bit metallic and watery towards the finish. Almost average.

Bottle at home. The colour is light amber with a big frothy off-white head, not far from whipped egg white. Floral aromas of hay, belgian ale fruityness, apricot and yeast. Much of the same stuff in the flavour with a bit more sweetness, some alcohol and feels pretty belgian. Soft and slick mouth feel, and light bitterness. A good ale but more belgian than british.

33cl bottle from Toscanaccio, Winchester. Amber with a thin, scummy white head; strongly malty aroma; sweet, caramel, malt flavour and an unpleasantly oily body that masks the hops; leaving a dry, citrus finish. Certainly different, and not entirely pleasant.
